Linear expressionism

A large body of current works by Pavlo Lopata represents geometrical decorative works where emphasis is on linear composition. One of the early works in this style is Motherhood (1986). Although upon initial reflection it may evoke religiosity, following the Ukrainian tradition of mother and child images representing the Blessed Virgin Mary, the artist intended this work to intrinsically represent a mother and child, not the Madonna holding Christ child. Additional works representing linear expressionism include: Bandurist, Girl with pysanka, Sopilkar, Musical trio, and others.
